DC Black Film & Media Club (Washington, DC)

What we’re about

Are you interested in Black Cinema or Media of the African Diaspora? Have you wanted ever wanted to watch and discuss films with other people who share your interest? The DC Black Film & Media Club (BFMC) seeks to unite people in the DC-Metropolitan area to watch and discuss current or past films with a focus on black cinema. Whether you’re involved in the film world or a just a film enthusiast like myself, you can hang out and enjoy flicks with new people!

Our group is very democratic and we don’t rely on a single organizer to suggest every event.

The group is open to all members to post events to the page! But, if you post an event, you must also agree to act as host.

YOU POST IT — YOU HOST IT.

You only have to 1) Post the details on our Meetup page; 2) Greet other members before the event; and 3) Have an informal discussion at the end of the event.

Hosting is easy, fun… and we get to watch all the films that we love, and hang out together as a real group! We hope you enjoy our 100% democratic format, and get into the spirit by hosting events, not only in theaters, but in your homes, churches and other venues all over the DC Metro area!

We are excited to have you, as part of our group, and we can’t wait to “See You at the Movies!” If you have questions, feel free to contact me: (202) 255-1005, or [email protected]

THANK YOU!

Free but must RSVP to attend
please RSVP at [masked]

Event Description

Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith have spent over 40 years traversing the African continent photographing the vanishing rituals, ceremonies and cultures of Africa.

This documentary by Realitymediaonline documents the spectacular launch of their double volume book of the vanishing rituals and ceremonies of the African continent with a carnival of music, dance, fashion, cuisine, costumes and fashions created of the vanishing hand woven and hand printed textiles of Africa at African Heritage House, Nairobi.

Free, please RSVP at [masked]

Alan Donovan, the founder of African Heritage, with former Vice President Joseph Murumbi and his wife Sheila, will reconstruct Kenya’s African Heritage Festival which has traveled the world with its troupe of models, musicians, dancers, acrobats and others.

Former stars of African Heritage will dazzle audiences including Khadija Adam, a former Miss Africa who went from an African Heritage Night to honour Angela Fisher’s first book, Africa Adorned, to the catwalk of Yves St. Laurent as his first African lead model.

The most famous African model, Iman, also started at African Heritage as did many others.

AFRICAN TWILIGHT will bring together this galaxy of stars once more to honour Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith without whom many if not most of these ceremonies of Africa would have been lost for future generations.
